Preconference Sessions

Three pre-conference sessions will again be offered this year. Two of these special sessions, open only to full conference attendees, will be given at different times on Tuesday afternoon, October 28, at a cost of $55 for each session, or both sessions for $100. Only full conference attendees are eligible to register for these sessions and all registrations must be received with your regular conference sign-up. Registration forms are included in the registration packet.

A third preconference session will be a closed meeting of the California School Information System Task Advisory Group (CSIS TAG).

Session 1
Cisco Brings Switching To The Desktop
Cisco Systems, Inc.
Tuesday, October 28, 1997 - 1:00-3:30 p.m.

The session will focus on why switching is a good investment in a LAN architecture. Discussion will include details on Cisco's buffering, VLAN strategy, Cisco Group Multicast Protocol (CGMP) for multimedia and voice, and RSVP for bandwidth reservation. Details will include discussion on 10mb to 100mb to the future with Gigabit Ethernet, Cisco's strategy for transition and investment protection and where ATM may or may not be a good option to consider. LAN designs will be shared for sample District Office Sites, High Schools, Middle Schools, and Elementary Schools. Questions are welcome and we will save plenty of time for chalk-talk and address your specific design questions. As applications intensify, Cisco Switching provides cost effective solutions to Network Management and Network Control issues.

Session 2
Using A Switch In Your Network
Allied Telesyn, Inc.
Tuesday, October 28, 1997 - 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Allied Telesyn will be providing information on where, when, why and how to use a switch in your network. ATI will also demonstrate the benefits of switched technology and the applications that it is most pertinent to. Some of the featured topics ATI will cover Virtual LANs, Port Mirroring, 100Mb vs. Switched 10Mb, Backbone vs.Workgroup/Desktop switching, Layer 3 Protocol Routing and Cost of Switch Ownership.

Session 3 (Closed)
Meeting of the California Student Information System Task Advisory Group (CSIS TAG)
Tudesday, October 28, 1997 - 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

The California School Information System Task Advisory Group (CSIS TAG) will be held on October 28. The meeting is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until noon in Suite 309 of The Sacramento Radisson Conference Center. Tom Henry, Executive Administrator of the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) will lead an agenda which will include discussion of the current legislation that has appropriated funds and provided direction for the CSIS project. FCMAT staff will update the TAG membership on the project administrator position, FCMAT's commitment to the project and the time line. Additional discussion will include the possibility of selecting regional representatives in order to have broad representation and contacts.
