Wednesday Keynote Speaker

Kerry Mazzoni
Secretary for Education
State of California

Kerry MazzoniKerry Mazzoni serves as Secretary for Education on the cabinet of California Governor Gray Davis. As Secretary, Mazzoni advises the Governor on all policy matters relating to California’s system of public schools, colleges and universities.

Prior to her appointment by Governor Davis on December 18, 2000, Ms. Mazzoni served three terms in the California State Assembly, representing Marin and Sonoma counties. From her election in 1994 to 2000, she served on a range of Assembly policy and fiscal committees including education, school facilities finance, banking and finance, utilities and commerce, and housing and community development. As Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, she considered milestone reform legislation such as California’s STAR program for academic assessment, class size reduction, California’s comprehensive system of accountability, raising teacher standards, school readiness and education technology.

Ms. Mazzoni was instrumental in the passage of the Governor’s six-point accountability legislation that established California’s landmark public school accountability program, the nation’s only statewide peer assistance program for teachers, and a high school examination requirement. She authored Assembly Bill 2X of the special session package to establish California’s Reading Professional Development Institutes, a model for professional teacher training that has expanded to the largest and most ambitious initiative for teacher professional development in the nation. The legislation also established K-4 Reading Academies to provide intensive reading instruction, and launched an aggressive public engagement campaign to involve all Californians in student reading achievement. While in office she authored benchmark legislation to keep commercial advertising out of student textbooks, to establish technology training requirements as a condition for teacher certification, and legislation to establish a pilot program to increase school readiness for kindergarten children. Prior to serving as a state elected official, Ms. Mazzoni became known as an outspoken and effective advocate for educational reform as a Trustee elected in 1987 to the Novato Unified School District Board. She served as President of the Board in 1990 and 1993, and was voted Marin County School Trustee of the Year in 1992. Ms. Mazzoni has always been an active community member, serving on the Marin County School-to-Career Partnership board, chairing the "No on Vouchers" Campaign (Proposition 174) and the Marin Public Education Coalition.

She is a graduate of the University of California, Davis with a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development. Mazzoni, 52, has two grown children, Casey and Peter.
